Deaf Umbrella aim to provide a solid support network to our staff that will in turn serve the Deaf community efficiently and effectively.  We believe, see, hear and feel that trained professional, committed and motivated people climbing the career ladder of the professional Interpreter offer a level of competence that can alleviate frustrations in situations where Deaf and hearing people interact.

All applicants will be required to attend a two stage interview.  We will ask you about your background and your ability to meet our employment needs. We will test your production and receptive skills in BSL, your deaf awareness, knowledge of deaf culture and history.

We do not employ everyone we meet, it is an involved interview and only the best or those with potential get through.  On application we ensure that each individual is suitable for the position they are applying for.  We discuss the domains and environments in which we work, and the company expectations of each employee.

What our staff say about us..

Thank you for all your support and advice, you have shown me how to believe in my judgment and guided me through a maze of information.  I see that I am making a difference and it's good! Joanne

Thank you for everything you have given me, including my confidence!  You need to gain experience to become a good interpreter.  You have guided me through with realism and understanding.  You have always supported me with any issues I have wanted to address by providing training and showing me how to develop support strategies.  I am looking forward to my next step to Interpreter status and will miss you.  I hope everyone walks your way when they start out.  Thanks once again.  Paula

I have enjoyed my time working with you, being part of the team.  I have benefited and grown through Staff Development even if the evening sessions were difficult to make on time!  It took me a while to realise the importance of feedback; you value this so highly.  I am now unable to complete a booking without evaluating my performance and critical thinking.  You are right, you do have to be a master in your own language before you can interpret into another, my A Level English course starts soon... thanks for everything!  I will keep in touch.  Steve
