You or
your Company may
provide
training and work opportunities for people who are disadvantaged in the
labour market due to disability. Each member of the team representing you
or your company must have knowledge of the disability with which they
work. Each disabled person you meet will
have specific issues that need to be addressed in tailored and specific
ways, these issues can benefit from external companies like ours who
specialise in a particular field. We aim to provide you with the
skills to assess, deal and facilitate your Deaf clients’ needs. We
are able to provide you or your team with information on Deaf Issues, Deaf
Awareness, Deaf Culture, language syntax and grammar. We believe
that we can shoulder some responsibility by providing consultancy services to aid
any employment issues.
If you have not used
a Language
Service Professional before you may be a little unsure of their role and
what they do. We want your experience of using communication support to be
a positive one and hope that the following information will prove useful
to you.
First and
foremost
you must consult
the D/deaf person if you are booking communication support on their
behalf. Some D/deaf people only want qualified interpreters to work
with them, and this is their right, however, many D/deaf people use a
variety of communication methods so you should seek to clarify the mode of
communication they wish to use.
The term Language
Service Professional (LSP) is a generic one which includes Interpreters, Communicators,
Communication Support Workers, Notetakers and Lip-speakers. Language
Service Professionals are trained professionals who provide a
communication link between Deaf and hearing people using British Sign
Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE)
British Sign
Language has its own grammatical structure and syntax, which is different
from English Language. All information heard by a Language Service
Professional, in English (source language), will be processed and produced
into British Sign Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE) (target
language), depending on the recipient’s preferred mode of communication.
This process is reversed when a Deaf person is signing; the Language
Service Professional will process what has been signed and voice the
information in English.
