February 2012 - Reveal celebrates a successful first year
Launched February 14th last year our Reveal program has proved very popular to last minute service need clients.  Registering to the service is simple, accessing where our staff are and when is a Reveal, gaining a one hour service is a revelation.  Reveal is fast, efficient and ready when you need that one hour appointment.

Feb 6th to 10th - National Tinnitus Week
Tinnitus is not a disease or an illness, it is a symptom generated within a person's own auditory pathways. Although it is often assumed that tinnitus occurs as a result of disease of the ears, this is often not the case. The precise cause of tinnitus is still not fully understood.  Find out what events are in your area or how you can help fund raising by visiting the British Tinnitus Association

Feb 10th - LSIS Safeguarding Conference
Amanda, our Office Manager is attending the annual conference of Learning Skills Improvement Service safeguarding conference.  DU are ensuring best practice on our safeguarding journey. DU advocate a whole organisation approach to safeguarding and recognise the relationship between safer recruitment and safeguarding the learner.

January 2012 - Happy New Year to all!
Let this truly be a celebration of a new year;
Let us remember the past but not dwell in it,
Let us fully use the present, yet not waste it,
Let us live for the future, yet not count on it.

December 2011 - Happy Christmas
St Giles Plaza London - Friday 9th Deaf Umbrella met for a Christmas meal and glass of wine.  Arriving at 7pm we drank and ate until late into the evening; where did the time go?!  Peter our BSL tutor and his wife Carol our cleaner said "its was a wonderful evening, having nearly everyone on the table signing was great; when is the next meal?"  Not sure about that one Carol, as yet, but we will be at the NDCS Signed Carol Concert Trafalgar Square December 15th at 7pm!  http://bit.ly/rBDXwk

Stage 2 looks at our processes in line with our management system by gathering objective evidence to demonstrate conformance.  These activities will consist of staff interviews, evaluation of internal audits and management review. Along with an audit of system controls and procedures; examining records and report writing.

Sponsored Walk - Ightham Mote

As many of you will already know, Deaf Umbrella is a big supporter of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.  We walked around Ightham Mote on Sunday.  This National Trust property is spectacular and proved to be a very enjoyable walk in wonderful surroundings for an extremely worthwhile cause! Fund raising can be completed through our just giving page:  http://www.justgiving.com/Deaf-Umbrella

We really enjoyed meeting Polly Evans from BBC newsroom South East and so far have raised £217.20 43% of our target.  Many thanks for those you have contributed and taken part.

 Strat of Marathon  Tower Bridge

Rachel & Grace Hubbard complete the London Shine Night-time Marathon in 10.5hrs!
Well what a night, we arrived at the 02 at 7pm to joyous singing and entertainment from Cancer Research Uk, Brenda McManus took us through some heart wrenching stories to remind us exactly why we were there and who we were supporting.  Grace and I have raised £850.00 for Lung Cancer; my father and adored Granddad is dealing very well with treatment at the moment and we are extremely proud of his positive attitude and constant sunny disposition. We left with the ‘Striders’ but I am sure returned with the ‘Strollers’.. :) We made friends along the way, supported each other constantly and supported those around us.  I would like to thank the lady who gave me a fresh pair of socks.. you saved my feet so much pain!  A great night, we have registered for 2012.  Thank you so much to family and friends who helped us raise so much money.  We forgot to take photos at the end, we needed to concentrate on how to put one foot in front of the other by then!  Will you register?

August 2011

Whilst most people enjoy the August month to holiday and rejuvenate ready for the next academic term or latter part of the year, Deaf Umbrella have been busy setting up our ISO 9001 standard.  Rachel has been busy working with Michael Gutierrez MCIPS Director of Help for Small Business Ltd to evaluate and improve our practices, procedures and processes.  Rachel commented that "We have always been proud of the service we offer our clients and the way we conduct our business, working towards the ISO 9001 certification will help us with ensuring quality services and investment in people and training that enables Deaf Umbrella to provide an efficient service to their customers."

Michael commented "It has been a pleasure working with Rachel, the processes and procedures are there, we just need a few tweaks to achieve certification.  I am looking forward to coming back in October to see what you have implemented prior to external assessment."

July 2011

We are developing an exciting training course with David Key and Auspicium.  Rachel Hubbard is proposing 2 x two day workshops to support the development of the DU Team, encouraging them to become more confident, proactive, creative and accountable in devising and providing the services they offer, through establishing clear team goals, common outcomes and a united sense of purpose. This course is an accredited course and each team member will (subject to assessment) receive a certified business diploma in Neuro Linguistic Programming as approved by ABNLP (American Board of NLP) and the ANLP which is the largest UK NLP accrediting board.  Deaf Umbrella and Auspicium believe that everyone already has all the resources they need to be brilliant….but sometimes they need a little help to unlock them!  We can’t wait to get started, is your name down?  Contact the office for more information. or watch on youtube now?!  http://youtu.be/6PAWw34_EHE

June 2011
LSIS Training & Deaf Umbrella DUET  - June 2011 rolling course..(Induction Essential)

Deaf Umbrella has a statutory and moral duty to ensure we function with the welfare of children and vulnerable adults in our uppermost thoughts.  We have a duty to ensure each member of our staffs has completed safeguarding training along with equality and diversity training prior to employment so that we provide a framework for protecting children and vulnerable adults from abuse of any kind.

“For those agencies whose job it is to protect children and vulnerable people, the harsh reality is that if a sufficiently devious person is determined to seek out opportunities to work their evil, no one can guarantee that they can be stopped.  Our task is to make it as difficult as possible for them to succeed.”  The Bichard Enquiry Report 2004.

The welfare of the child or vulnerable adult is paramount in our position, all children and vulnerable adults regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse.  As such Deaf Umbrella's policy and training has been created to ensure safeguarding provision for our clients.  This policy applies to all staff, volunteers and others who work with or come into contact with children and vulnerable adults.

Training sessions are interactive, you will be given a CD to support your learning and encompas 4 hrs with Certification

May 26th:
Deaf Umbrella attended the Learning & Skills Improvement Service
Signpost to Learning - D/deaf learner event 2011

This event was part of an overall project set up by LSIS and funded by the Skills Funding Agency to improve the access and outcomes for D/deaf learners in the further education and skills sector.  The creation of this learner voice event has been a central programme within the project. It has offered a key opportunity for learning and developing a deeper understanding about the challenges faced by D/deaf learners, the impact on their equality of opportunity to access their education and the many different solutions that are appropriate.

We have moved! April 21st 2011

What a lot of things we accumulated over the ten years at Rectory Lane. Phew! We will be sad to leave but pleased to find ourselves in one open plan office that is much better for our staff meetings and training. We are overlooking the River Cray and nestled in the wonderful historic village of Bexley. Please do come and see us at any time, we are only 20 mins on the train from Central London.

Deaf Umbrella would like to thank everyone who has sent us good wishes and helped us to date; you make us what we are today and we thank you.

Happy Easter the DU Team.

Well DoneFeb 2011
Well done to those who supported us for "Paws for Coffee" day, we raised £55.25.. yay!

Jan 2011

Dear Colleagues

As you are no doubt aware, Deaf Umbrella is keen to support Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and we have decided to participate in their Paws for Coffee campaign.

 Paws for Coffee

We appreciate that it will be logistically very difficult for us all to meet for a Coffee Morning!  However, we have decided to hold a “virtual” event on Friday 28th January.  All we are asking you to do is to “match” anything you spend on food or drink on this day and send these monies to us with your timesheets for that week.  This will enable us to support the work of this extremely worthwhile charity which has transformed the lives of so many deaf and hard of hearing people.  It is particularly gratifying to note that the Charity is now training dogs to work with deaf children, and they are actively seeking to expand this Pilot Scheme.

We hope that you will feel able to support this “virtual” event.

With very many thanks & kindest regards, Amanda
