You’ve probably seen Deaf Awareness Week mentioned before.
But here’s the honest question:

Are we actually becoming more deaf-aware… or just more aware that the week exists?
Because awareness without action changes nothing.
Deaf Awareness Week is a UK-wide campaign focused on improving understanding of Deaf experiences, communication, and accessibility.
It’s about removing everyday barriers that Deaf people face at home, in education, and at work.
This year's theme is “Right to Understand: Together We Break Barriers”, and it matters more than it sounds, because the biggest barrier isn’t hearing loss, but people assuming communication is “good enough”.
Examples:
Meetings without captions or interpreters
Phone calls when someone clearly asked for text
Teachers speaking while facing the board
Group conversations where Deaf people are left out
The right to understand means access. Not effort.
This year, we’re not just posting awareness content. We’re sharing:
5 practical newsletters (real-life situations + what to do). Make sure you're subscribed!
Free resources you can actually use immediately
Short videos with simple communication tips
Real scenarios from workplaces and education
Content you’ll want to save and share
What you should do now
If you wait until Deaf Awareness Week to act, you’re already late. Every year, training slots fill up quickly.
